CRTC shouldn’t be ‘umpire’ in revenue sharing between big tech and Canadian media

National Post: 'Former CRTC vice-chair Peter Menzies said the CRTC should definitely not be the regulator for the new legislation, which the government has said will follow the Australian model. “That would be like putting a baseball umpire in charge of a soccer game,” he said. “Yes, it has expertise in broadcasting, but news is a very small component of broadcasting.”

'The legislation will cover both print and broadcast news, Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez has previously confirmed. He’s said the bill will encourage “tech giants and news outlets to negotiate fair and equitable deals.”'
